So, as I mentioned before, I recently got married. For as long as we’ve had Oliver I’ve always felt self-conscious that I had a different last name than my kid(s). So we get married and naturally you think name change would be #1 on my list and it was, but if you’re like me and know anything about anxiety or procrastination you know it’s not always rational. So, first when I look up “how to change your last name in CT” it says you have to wait 45 days before you can request a name change. In reality you only have to wait until you get your marriage certificate back, which took about a week. The next part is, you have to then go to a Social Security office to show them your marriage certificate and your ID. THIS was the thing that got me going… you see, I typically drop off the kids at school at 8:15, then I go home and finish getting ready for work and then head out around 9:15/ 9:30 to be at work at 10. The Social Security office doesn’t open until 9:00, so how in the world was I going to get to work on time if it doesn’t open until 9 and they’re obviously like the DMV and I’m going to be waiting for hours? So after about 3 months of telling myself I don’t have time for it Cam and I have a day off together and he offers to come with me. We drop off the kids at school and go over to Social Security. We walk in and there is not a single person in the waiting room aside from the security guard. I am instructed to go check in on the kiosk before sitting down. As I am heading to a seat in the waiting room the lady behind the counter calls me over, asks for my ID and Marriage license, verifies my new name is correct and sends me on my way. In total, we were in the building less than 5 minutes… it took me longer to figure out how to change my name on Facebook than it did to LEGALLY change my name. So friends, the next time you get all in your head about how long something is going to take or all the reasons you can’t just do something you’ve been needing to do, remember this, and just do it, just go get it done, bring a friend if that helps! I promise, it’s not that bad.
